N. Retirement
Formal retirement from the University is a voluntary termination. A Faculty member who wishes to
discuss retirement should consult with the Chair of the department and with the Office of the Dean
of the Faculty.
The Board of Trustees approves the transfer to emeritus status of retirement benefits-eligible
tenured Faculty who formally retire from the University.
The Dean of the Faculty approves the transfer to emeritus status of retirement benefits- eligible
Faculty in the ranks of Senior Lecturer, University Lecturer, and Professor of the Practice who
formally retire from the University.
When Faculty are transferred to emeritus status and retain a professional connection with
Princeton, they are expected to conduct their future research and professional activities in
accordance with University policy. Emeriti faculty with the rank of Professor Emeritus (Teaching),
Associate Professor Emeritus (Teaching), Professor of the Practice Emeritus (Teaching), University
Lecturer Emeritus (Teaching), or Senior Lecturer Emeritus (Teaching)
may teach on an occasional and part-time basis when needed.
