Subject:    New policy regarding consensual relations with students

I write to update you regarding the ongoing discussion of the University’s sexual misconduct and consensual relations policies.  As you may know, at yesterday’s faculty meeting, the Faculty Advisory Committee on Policy (FACP) brought forward for the approval of the faculty proposed revisions to Rules & Procedures of the Faculty, namely:  Chapter V., Section C. Consensual Relations with Students.

Prior to the meeting yesterday, University policy prohibited all sexual and romantic relationships between faculty members and undergraduate students, and prohibited only those relationships with graduate students over whom they had advising, instruction, or supervisory responsibilities.  Under the new policy approved at the faculty meeting yesterday, all sexual and romantic relationships between faculty members and graduate students are prohibited, paralleling the policy already in place for undergraduate students.  The new policy, which takes effect immediately, is attached, and a link to the updated Rules & Procedures of the Faculty is here:  https://dof.princeton.edu/rules-and-procedures.

This is an important step in ensuring that we create a safe, respectful, and equitable learning environment for everyone on campus.  Please take the time to read and familiarize yourself with the revised policy, and contact the Office of the Dean of the Faculty with any questions.
